THE JOY OF READING (Grade 3 & 4)



    AITIS JOY OF READING PROGRAM
    I am a BOOK LOVER

    Blue Level Task List
    Complete one activity for every book/story you read.
    Describe the main character in a paragraph of 6 to 8 sentences.
    Compare and contrast 2 characters in the story.
    Write a letter to the author and tell why you did or did not like the book.
    Write a new ending for the story.
    Write a summary of the book read.
    Make a comic book of the story (showing the main events in sequential order of the story).
    Make a list of the characters in the story and tell why they are important in the story.
    Select one character from the book and answer the following questions:
    What traits does this character have that I do not have?
    What traits do I have that the character does not have?
    Compare and contrast the book with another you have read.
         Tell which character you like in the book and give two reasons why you like the character.
    Make a timeline of important events in the story.
    Pick 4 vocabulary words that either you don’t know the meaning of or are important to understanding the story/book. Complete the Card for each word.

    Red Level Task List
    Complete one activity for every book you read.
    Write a letter to the author and tell why you did or did not like the book.
    Persuade him/her to change the part you didn’t like.
    Write a summary of the book.
    Make a timeline of important events in the story.
    Make a list of the characters in the story and tell why they are important to the story. Write one paragraph for each character (not less than 10 sentences for each character).
     Tell what do you like in the book such as character, main theme and give two reasons to support your option why you like it.
    Describe story elements such as character, theme, setting, conflict, climax and ending.
    Illustrate the story into logical order from beginning to end and write what happens in each picture.
    Pretending that you are a news reporter, provide a 5- minute oral broadcast of the story.
    Create a tour guide for a place in the story (advertisement for the place etc.).
    Re-tell some events in the story from another character’s point of view.
    Write a written interview with one of the characters in the story.
    Character Diary. Write the diary of a character in the story.
    Write poems inspired by events/situations in the book.
    Look for characters’ problems & how they solve them. List steps taken to solve it and the solution.
    Comparing and contrasting. Use Venn Diagram chart to compare and contrast characters/things in stories or articles.
    Distinguish facts & opinions. Look for facts & opinions in the book or the article.
    Recognize cause & effects. Think about events and what caused them.
    Pick 4 vocabulary words that either you don’t know the meaning of or are important to understanding the story/book. Complete the Card for each word.

    Green Level Task List
    Complete one activity for every book/story you read.
     Draw 4 pictures about the story and write one sentence for each picture.
    Illustrate the part of the story which you like best and write why.
    Create a mini-book from the story, design a cover: “A Book By You”.
    Write to the author telling him your opinion about the book and why.
     Make a picture of at least 2-3 characters in the story.  List the traits at the back.
    Tell the story to the class.
    Draw predictions of what happened at the end of the story.
    Write something that you learned from the books.
    Make a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two characters in the story.
    Make a list of ideas in the story to support fact or fantasy.
    Make a poster to spark interest to others to read the book.
    Illustrate the story into logical order from beginning to end and write what happens in each picture.
    Pretending that you are a news reporter, provide an oral broadcast of the story.
    What parts of the story are most believable or unbelievable? Write 3 believable sentences and 3 unbelievable.
